The Exciting Benefits of CBD For Dogs
What Are The Potential Benefits of CBD for Dogs
CBD is a form of cannabis oil that can be used to potentially provide relief for many dogs, and research is already showing very promising results for mitigating the impact of canine nausea, stress, anxiety, back pain, gastrointestinal issues, and so many other health conditions that pets and their guardians suffer through.
As an animal loving guardian of my own dogs, the potential breakthroughs of CBD supplements being discussed by doctors, veterinarians and researchers are very exciting. Being able to treat skin conditions other salves didn’t seem to help, calming the anxiety my pups feel when thunder storms pass overhead – so many uses seem valuable that I decided to do some research into the reality of CBD for dogs and I hope you find it helpful.
Virtually Zero Known Side-Effects Make CBD Even More Promising
Side effects from medications for your pets are always an important concern, especially due to the fact that animals have a harder time communicating any negative consequences of a medication than humans generally would. The two primary kinds of side effects a pet may experience are what have been called direct or indirect side effects.
A direct side effect is a side effect caused by the medication itself. An indirect side effect is one that can be attributed to a negative interaction between a one particular new medication and another medication the dog was taking already.
Dr. Gary Richter, owner and medical director of Montclair Veterinary Hospital in Oakland, California has stated in an interview published by PetMD that the wrong dose can lead to many potential risks for pets. “The most significant is THC toxicity, meaning, essentially, they are high. During these episodes, a pet may not be able to stand or eat.”
For that reason many pet guardians are now pursuing pet supplements that contain CBD without any THC in the solution. That sort of dietary supplement or salve would make the benefits of CBD available to your pet without any chance of a “high” or other complications that might be caused by THC, or other impurities. When choosing a CBD supplement that is right for your pet, always read the packaging carefully to be sure your loved one is ingesting only the purest CBD without any additives or THC included.
As to the question of indirect side effects, the results so far appear to be even more exciting. “Emerging research suggests there can be synergistic benefits between marijuana and traditional medications [in part because] there are few, if any, known significant drug interactions that you really need to be concerned about,” said Dr. Richter.
One thing appears to be undeniable, the effects of CBD seem to be far less problematic than the side effect profile of many other treatments that are approved for dogs as a more traditional way of handling certain ailments.
How Do I Know Which Kind of CBD Pet Supplement Works Best?
CBD supplements for pets are not regulated as strictly as medications from a pharmacy would be, so there are a few very important things to consider when obtaining CBD for your loved ones.
1- Is the CBD supplement organic?
The best CBD supplements come only from high-quality CBD oils that are derived directly from organically grown cannabis. CBD that is not organic may have unnecessary additives or leftover traces of harmful chemicals from pesticides. Always be sure your dog’s CBD is completely organic.
2- How was the CBD supplement processed?
Different providers use a variety of processes to extract CBD from the plant. Safe methods include complex processes like carbon dioxide and cold press extraction, but you should be on the lookout for those who use cheaper methods that rely on potentially toxic solvents like propane or butane.
3 - Is your dog’s CBD supplement independently tested?
Many brands are able to provide a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent lab that has already tested samples of their CBD to make sure the CBD is healthy for your dog on a microbiologic level without any pesticides, solvents, or other harmful additives.
4 – Does the Dog’s Supplement Contain Any THC?
As explained earlier, THC is the compound in cannabis that causes a euphoric “high” in humans and it can be detrimental to the well being of your dog. Always check the THC level in any CBD you intend to give a canine for treatment. Look for products with less than 0.3% THC. Anything below that levels is negligible and will keep your dog safe from THC.
How Can I Get My Dog To Take CBD Treatments Easily?
The form of treatment usually depends on the sort of ailment. For example, for skin conditions and joint pains, there are some topical creams and salves, but for any internal maladies CBD is typically administered orally to dogs. Fortunately, CBD is available in a liquid form, making it as simple as adding it to their daily food at mealtime.
As with any other kind of supplement, dogs differ on whether they like the flavor of certain CBD supplements so some pet owners add flavorings over their own to make it tastier. A little broth or a dog’s favorite treat coupled with CBD can go a long way toward helping your pup get all the benefits of CBD in the simplest most palatable way. It may take a little experimentation with CBD to find the right menu items to pair treatments with, but some say CBD also enhances a weak appetite in dogs and over the course of treatments it may actually become something your dog looks forward to ingesting.
Is The Research About CBD For Dogs Complete?
As with any form of medical treatment, research will always be an ongoing process. That being said, there have already been significant studies on the subject and deeper clinical trials appear to be on the horizon already.
The most extensive Canine CBD report done so far was titled A Report of Adverse Effects Associated With the Administration of Cannabidiol in Healthy Dogs and it was conducted by Stephanie McGrath, DVM, MS, Lisa R. Bartner, DVM, MS, Sangeeta Rao, BVSc, MVSc, PhD, Lori R. Kogan, PhD, Peter W. Hellyer, DVM, MS of Colorado State University.
Their report concluded, “Numerous potential therapeutic uses of CBD have surfaced over the last decade. An extensive safety study utilizing clinically-applicable doses is necessary to evaluate the long-term effects of CBD on the canine liver and gastrointestinal function. The result presented in this study, along with the numerous potential applications for CBD use in human medicine, has helped set the stage for veterinary clinical trials. Prospective, randomized, double-blind studies are required to investigate the effectiveness of CBD and to establish doses that provide therapeutic effects.”
As you can see, there is already some consensus among researchers and early adopters that CBD is making strides as a treatment or even a potential cure for health problems experienced by dogs, and there is also a general agreement by everyone that the research into these potentially live saving supplements needs to go even deeper as we move forward.
Drawing Your Own Conclusions About Dogs And CBD Treatments
Everyone wants to enjoy life with their dogs. We love our dogs every bit as much as we would any other member of our family, and that starts by helping your furry loved ones to live a happy, healthy, pain-free lifestyle on an every day basis. If your dog becomes sick or injured, you want to be able to help and that may include finding treatments that are newer with less side effects or better results than older more traditional treatments.
CBD for Dogs is a new treatment that has found a rapidly growing community of pet owners willing to embrace it because the early research has been so promising. There are very few known side effects, none of the side effects appear to be particularly problematic beyond things like dysentery – so animal lovers are even more willing to try CBD to see if their pet benefits from it.
More research is underway and the results of some studies are now pending, but for early adopters who can’t bear to see their dog suffering, or for dog owners whose pets are dealing with terminal illnesses CBD appears to be the breath of fresh air that only comes around once in a generation. Obviously you should speak with your trusted veterinarian, and you do need to decide for yourself what is best for you and your dogs. We hope you find health, happiness and peace no matter which path you choose and that your best friend can continue to walk along that path with you side by side for many years to come!
